Dachshunds or doxies are probably the cutest dog breed out there. Dachshund is a small dog that was developed in Germany over 600 years ago. Main idea was to hunt badgers. Their short legs and long bodies are not just to look unique but these traits helped them to dig into badger dens. Today they are super cute, friendly family pets and everytime you look at them a smile on your face just pops up. We dare you to try not to smile 🙂
However, people have some questions about dachshund, like how much do dachshunds shed? We will try to shed some light on this matter by types of dachshunds.
How much do dachshunds shed and what to expect?
Like all dogs dachshunds do shed, there is no escaping hairs in carpet, sofa or your sweater. But here is the good news, dachshunds are a fairly moderate shedding breed which means that you will notice some hair around but not too much. If you brush them regularly and clean occasionally with a vacuum cleaner it should be easy to keep the dog hair under control.Â
Also, shedding depends on types of dachshund, there are 3 types: smooth-haired dachshunds, longhaired dachshunds and wirehaired dachshunds. Shedding depends, you can guess, on the length of a coat. We will cover all three types.
If you are looking for a non-shedding dog, doxies is not one of them and it is not the best pick for people who have dog allergies because the coat is not hypoallergenic.Â
Smooth-haired dachshund and do short haired dachshunds shed?
Smooth-haired dachshunds are the most common types of doxies, sometimes they are called short haired dachshunds. From a name you can gather that they have short, smooth, shiny and short hair. But the question is, do smooth-haired dachshunds shed?Â
Like all dogs, they are shedding regularly but lightly do moderately even some doxie owners will say they don’t shed, because smooth haired dachshunds have tiny hairs. You may not even realize until you vacuum your house or apartment. Also, it is good to know because fur is short, they don’t need heavy grooming. Like we said already, if you brush regularly and clean after them, you will not see much hair.
Fun fact, by massaging their skin while brushing, it causes them to release natural oils. Brushing helps spread those oils through fur to keep them well moisturized and ready for cutest pictures for you to post on social media.
Long-haired dachshund and do long haired dachshunds shed?
As long-haired dachshunds have the longest coat of all three types of doxies, they shed the most. It is mostly because they have longer and more dense coats. But you may be surprised that longer fur does not mean more shedding and more hairs on your sofa. Long-haired dachshunds shed as much as short haired ones. Although they will need more combing and grooming.
Daily brushing and combing with a comb is recommended and will come handy. On the plus side, daily brushing will benefit them to have better fur.
Wirehaired dachshund and do wirehaired dachshunds shed?
Wirehaired dachshunds , the least common type of dachshunds, tend to shed the most. Grooming these doxies are most high maintenance when it comes to brushing and grooming. They are known as doxies with double coats.
Instead of only one layer of hair, wirehaired dachshunds have two layers. Dense, undercoat that keeps them warm during the winter and thinner, outer that keep them cool during the summer.
Also, in addition to shedding, they will shed twice a year (spring and autumn) and you can expect an even greater amount of hairs during this time.
What can you do? Brush them regularly and daily when there is seasonal shedding. Also, one option is to take them to a professional dog groomer regularly.Â
How to groom a dachshund?
Grooming a dachshund is simple. It will become your routine very fast, 1 to 2 a week. We recommend using a soft brush or a rubber mitt. Best way to brush and groom a dachshund is to brush it in the direction that the hair grows. This way you will remove any dead or loose hair from your dog’s coat and also untie any untidy appearance. If you do this each week and very soon you will see a soft, smooth and shiny coat. If you still have any doubts about how to brush and groom your dog look at this video we found on Youtube.
Are Dachshund hypoallergenic dog
Dachshunds are cute dogs but in one word they are not hypoallergenic, so if you have dog allergy dachshund is not a dog for you. But what dogs are hypoallergenic. If you really want one (and everyone does) there is something you can do to reduce your allergies.Â
You should groom and brush your dog regularly, once or even twice a week (they will love it). Also, what you can do is vacuum after them and their favorite place to chill.
Good thing is that doxies are moderate and light shedders so if you look after them and brush them you can reduce your allergies to minimum and enjoy this type of dog for eternity.
